Fighting the Good Fight of Faith

Leader, walk throughout the rest of 2015 fighting the good fight of faith, laying hold of the life of God in every area of your life. It may have been a tough start this year.  But, God says that His people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, not for lack of shouting or singing. God is in control of the church, not the world, but the church can't control the world if people don't know what weapons they have and how to utilize them. In this article, Bishop Butler gives direction for getting out of fear and fighting the good fight of faith, laying hold of all God has to offer.

In 1 Timothy 6:12, Paul says, Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. The word fight in the Greek means to compete for a prize, to contend with an adversary, to endeavor to accomplish something, to labor fervently, or to strive. The word good, kalos in the Greek, means beautiful and valuable, virtuous, better, and worthy. Thus, Paul says, "Fight the the beautiful, valuable, and worthy fight of faith, a word meaning trust, confidence, reliance, assurance, persuasion, and belief."

The good fight of faith is about laying hold of eternal life and professing that before many witnesses, not about receiving a new car, a home, clothes, and a vacation. When you use your faith to have the full manifestation of the life of God, everything else follows. The life in the Word of God is stronger than the death that Satan perpetuates, but in order to have victory over death, you are going to have to contend for life. The physical man can't produce life; he depends upon the spirit for life.

Thus, there are opposing forces: fear and death oppose faith and life. Fear and faith are spiritual forces, although both of them are really faith-based. One is faith in God, and the other is faith in death. Let me give you an example. If you are driving north on an interstate, you can turn and go south—it's the same highway. Likewise, if you are living in faith, your spiritual man can turn and get into fear. Fear is faith contaminated. All doubt, depression, and unbelief are fear based.

Fear is the enemy of all faith. Fear is faith in death. You are not afraid of flying; you are afraid of dying. You are not afraid of driving; you are afraid of getting killed (see Hebrews 2:14-15). People make decisions every day, and they make the wrong decisions because of the fear of death. The spirit of death is one of the names the Bible gives Satan. He is also known in the Bible as the spirit of fear.

Job was the richest man in the East, and he loved God. He connected himself to the spirit of fear, however, offering sacrifices constantly for fear that one of his children may have sinned. The spirit of fear kills, steals, and destroys, and that's what happened to Job. His deliverance came when he connected to the spirit of life, when he got back into faith in God, praying for his friends. Immediately that death was broken. He experienced healing, and he received double for everything that he lost.

The same thing happened with Adam. God told Adam that he could eat of everything except the fruit of the tree of good and evil. Adam was given a consequence: the day you eat, you will die. The spirit of fear and death, satan, came along, lying to Eve, saying, "No, that won't happen!"

Adam had a choice. He could stay connected to God and to the spirit of life or he could connect to satan, the spirit of death. He drew from that spiritual death and died spiritually. That death flowed right on into the human race.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment [pain, anguish, affliction, and punishment.] He that feareth is not made perfect in love (1 John 4:18). Fear is separation from God and connection to satan; fear comes with torment. No wonder every time Jesus approached someone in the Gospels, He led by saying, "Fear not." In other words, He was saying, "I want you to stay connected to me. I want you connected to my life and my love. If you open the door with fear, you will connect to satan and draw from his killing, stealing and destruction, and you won't be able to receive what you want."

Don't be afraid. Don't get over into fear. I don't know what you are going through right now, but I can tell you what God is telling you: "Fear not." This is a year of victory over death. Perfect love casts out fear. Your trust, confidence, belief, persuasion and assurance in God connect with the life of God and hold to it, drawing from it the spirit of life in Christ Jesus.

Satan tries to get you over into fear, doubt, and unbelief, but the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus [frees you] from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2). Satan wants you to get your eyes on your situation, but you can choose to fight the good fight of faith and connect yourself to the Spirit of life, the Holy Ghost, and draw from His miraculous power.

You can do all things through Christ! Connect your faith to Him and draw from Him all of His DNA, all of His life, goodness, ability, and power. For God hath not given [you] the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind  (2 Timothy 1:7). He has given you His miraculous power, strength, knowledge, and wisdom.

You fight the good fight of faith when you lay hold on the very life of God, when you lay hold on the Word of God and believe that Word. You discover that the law of sin and death, satan himself, has no power over you. The law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus frees you from the law of sin and death (see Romans 8:2).

Too many in the church don't know that. Some of them are still saying, "Lord, why don't you get the devil off me?" God is saying, "What do you mean, get the devil off you? I gave you the power and the ability to resist him. I gave you the Holy Ghost, and I gave you my Word. Grab hold of my life, and satan will run." God isn't in control of the world; He is in control of the church. He needs the church to stand up and do its job. If the church finds out the truth and stands in its rightful place, the law of sin and death will not rule our families, our cities, or our nation.

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57). You have victory now, not just at the point of death. You have victory every step you take. You have victory every place you go. You are a walking victory machine in the face of the killing, stealing, and destroying. You are the hope of the whole world. You are the hope of Europe. You are the hope of Asia. You are the hope of China. God has given you the Gospel!

Since you have been freed from the fear of death, there is no reason why you should not be preaching the Gospel everywhere. You may say, "Yes, but they won't like me. My boss may not hold my job for me. You don't understand." Yes, I understand. The law of sin and death has hold of you. But when you understand who you are and what Jesus has done for you, you will understand that your job doesn't supply your needs. You will understand that the mouths of men and women have no power over you. There's only one word that has power over you and that is the life-giving power in God's Word. God's Word is full of power, and if you have a Word from God, it doesn't matter what anyone else says. Thanks be unto God who gives you the victory!
