How to Cooperate with the Holy Spirit

2015 is the year of visitations, manifestations, and demonstrations. I anticipate Holy Spirit to move every time the church comes together. Furthermore, I expect that Spirit filled believers will be operating in various gifts of the Spirit in their every day lives. That is how it was with the early church. From the first chapter through the last, the book of Acts is filled with visitations, manifestations, and demonstrations of the Holy Spirit.

Attitudes and Actions that Allow the Gifts of the Spirit to Operate

I've noticed there were some attitudes and actions the early believers embraced that allowed the Holy Spirit and His gifts to manifest. Here are some of the things believers in the book of Acts did that allowed them to cooperate with the Holy Spirit so He could have His way:

  • They obeyed God. The Lord told them what to do and they did it. When they obeyed God they put themselves in position for visitations, manifestations, and demonstrations: Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. (Acts 13:1-4)
  • They were in one accord. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (Acts 2:1-3)
  • They allowed themselves to be yielded and used of the Lord. Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. (Acts 3:1-8)

Attitudes and Behaviors that Hinder the Move of the Holy Spirit

There are also attitudes and behaviors that will keep the Holy Spirit from moving. The biggest two are strife and unforgiveness. Spiritual gifts operate most effectively among believers who have some depth in Christ. The spirit of division has the ability to stop further revelation coming to you and causes you to lose your depth in Christ. Getting involved in division and carnality can cause an adult in the Lord to actually revert back to the position of "spiritual baby": And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:1-6)

Be Undevourable

Satan is always be trying to divide the body of Christ. Don't be surprised when he comes after you. 1 Peter 5:8 warns us "Be sober [think straight - not like a drunk] be vigilant [stay awake]; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." If he has to walk about seeking whom he may devour, there are people that are not devourable. You can be the undevourable by walking in love. "Whom resist stedfast in the faith," Resist steadfast in your faith in God. Your faith in God says, "Regardless of what other people do to me, His name is the God that makes things right." Knowing that God is Jehovah Tsdikenu, the God who will always make things right in the end, will help you to walk in love. It may seem that the injustice or offence you suffered will harm you forever, but it won't. God will make it right. Just respond in love.

Motivation for Operating in Spiritual Gifts

Have you ever noticed that the famous "love" chapter of the Bible is right smack in between two chapters about the operation and manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit? That isn't an accident, you know! 1 Corinthians chapters 12 and 14 list the spiritual gifts and discuss proper protocol in a church service. However, chapter 13 gives the proper motivation for operating in spiritual gifts: "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity [love – agape], I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing." (1 Corinthians 13:1-3) So Paul said there, "My motive, despite the gifts, my motives and my attitude determine whether or not God will count it to my credit."

Now, the Lord uses me with gifts of the Spirit. He uses me with tongues and interpretation, and prophecy, word of knowledge, gifts of healing, and other manifestations. But none of it would come to me if wasn't coming from my heart with love: love of God first, then love toward my fellow man. Everything you do should be motivated by love. Don't do things so people will think you're holy or super spiritual. Give, pray, and manifest the power of God because you love God and you love people. Let the manifestations of the Spirit operate through you simply because of love.

Being filled with the Holy Ghost is being filled with Love

Romans 5:1-5 "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace [prosperity, quietness, rest] with God through our Lord Jesus Christ [Supreme Authority]: By whom also we have access [entrance] by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations [pressure] also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed." Hope causes us not to be dishonored - the word ashamed. In other words, the hope that we have is in Jesus. Why are we not ashamed? "Because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." If you are filled with the Holy Ghost, you are filled with the love of God. This love is what keeps manifestations, visitations, and demonstrations operating. In fact, manifestations, visitations, and demonstrations are available to us only because of God's great love.

Increase Love/Increase Manifestations

Your love can increase. Paul prayed for the church at Philippi that their love would get bigger and bigger: And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment (Philippians 1:9) We should pray the same way for one another in the body of Christ, and as we do, we will see more manifestations of the love of God. There will be more demonstrations of the revelation gifts, the power gifts, and the vocal gifts. It will happen in your Sunday church services, your mid-week services, and it will happen in the day-to-day lives of believers who dare to walk in love.
